What a positive result actually means
A specific IgE test tells you whether your immune system has produced antibodies to something. That is called sensitisation, and it is not the same as being allergic. Plenty of people test positive to foods they eat every week without any trouble at all.
This matters because a list of positives, read on its own, talks people into cutting out foods they never needed to avoid. What makes a result useful is your history: what happened, to what, and how quickly. That is why we go through the report with you rather than emailing you a set of numbers.
It also shapes what is worth testing in the first place. If you already have a fair idea what causes a reaction, a few single allergens is cheaper and far easier to interpret than a broad panel. Testing for everything is rarely the clearest answer.
What we will not sell you
We do not offer IgG blood testing for food intolerance. It is widely sold, and it is not supported by the evidence - the British Society for Allergy and Clinical Immunology and NICE both advise against using it to diagnose intolerance. Acting on one usually means restricting your diet for no reason.
If you suspect an intolerance rather than an allergy, a GP appointment and a properly supervised food diary will get you a real answer. We would rather book you that.
And if you have ever had a severe reaction - swelling of the mouth or throat, difficulty breathing, or collapse - a blood test on its own is not the right next step. - What can you test for?
- Foods, pollens, moulds, house dust mite and animal dander, among others. You can take a ready-made panel or pick individual allergens - there are over 180 to choose from.
- What does it cost?
- Single allergens are £20 each. Ready-made panels start at £92 for shellfish, £103.50 for dairy and £104.50 for inhalants, with broader food panels from £177.50. Reception will price it before you commit to anything.
- Should I take a panel or pick individual allergens?
- It depends on how clear your suspicion is. If you already know roughly what causes a reaction, a few single allergens is cheaper and easier to interpret. If the trigger is genuinely unknown within a food group, a panel casts a wider net. We will talk it through before you book.
- What does a positive result actually mean?
- That you are sensitised to that allergen - which is not the same as being allergic to it. Plenty of people test positive to foods they eat without any problem. A result only means something read alongside what you have actually experienced, which is why a clinician goes through it with you rather than emailing you a number.
- Can you test for food intolerance?
- Not reliably, and we would rather say so. The IgG blood tests sold as intolerance testing are not supported by the evidence, and acting on one usually means cutting out foods you did not need to. If you suspect an intolerance, a GP appointment and a supervised food diary will get you further than a test will.
- Do I need a referral?
- No. You can book directly, and you do not need to leave your NHS GP.
- I have had a severe reaction before - is a blood test enough?
- No. If you have ever had a severe reaction - swelling of the mouth or throat, difficulty breathing, collapse - that needs proper clinical assessment and a management plan, not just a test. Ring us and we will tell you what is appropriate, and if that is an NHS allergy clinic referral we will say so.
