How we assess children
A DSM-5 compliant assessment for children aged 5 and over, carried out by assessors experienced with this age group. Because ADHD has to show in more than one setting, the process gathers input from home and school through pre-assessment questionnaires before the clinical appointment itself.
Parents are part of the appointment - the assessment is a conversation with your child, not something done to them.

- Because ADHD has to show in more than one setting, parents and, where appropriate, the school complete screening questionnaires beforehand. The assessment itself is a 90-minute structured interview with your child and you, against DSM-5 criteria, followed by a written report, a diagnosis where appropriate and a plan with treatment options discussed.
- Do I stay in the room?
- Yes. Parents are part of the appointment; it is a conversation with your child, not something done to them.
- Will school and our NHS GP accept the report?
- The report is written so you can take it to school and to your NHS GP. Shared care is your NHS GP practice's decision and some practices in this area currently decline it for private diagnoses; ask yours before you book. If they decline, you can continue reviews and prescriptions privately with us.
- Do we need a referral, and how long is the wait?
- No referral is needed and you keep your NHS GP. Assessments are usually booked within weeks.
