Walk-in centre or private GP? How to decide when you need to be seen today
Both get you seen quickly. They suit different problems, and one of them is free. Here is an honest comparison for anyone in Hull deciding where to go.
If you need to see a doctor today in Hull, you have a few options, and they are genuinely different. We are a private clinic, so treat what follows accordingly - but we would rather be straight about when we are not the right answer than waste your afternoon.
An NHS walk-in centre
Free, no appointment needed, and you are seen in turn. The trade-off is that you do not know how long you will wait, and you will usually see whoever is available rather than the same person twice.
A walk-in centre is the right choice for urgent problems when cost matters more than time: an infection that needs looking at, a minor injury, something that has come on suddenly and cannot wait for your own GP.
Your own NHS GP
Free, and they have your full history, which genuinely matters for anything ongoing. The difficulty is getting in quickly - which is why you are reading this.
A private GP appointment
You pay, but you book a time rather than take a ticket, and the appointment is longer. Ours are 30 minutes, which is the real difference: enough to explain the whole problem rather than the one thing you can fit into ten minutes.
People tend to come to us for a few specific reasons:
- Something has been going on for a while and needs unpicking properly
- They need a sick note, a private prescription or a referral letter and cannot wait weeks
- They want a second opinion on something they have already been seen about
- They have a lump or a skin change they want looked at now rather than worried about for a month
What private care does not change
Two things worth being clear on. Paying does not put you ahead of anyone in an NHS queue - it is a separate service, not a faster lane into the same one. And you do not need to leave your NHS GP to see us. You can come once and never again if that is all you need.
If it is an emergency
Ring 999, or 111 if you are not sure. We are a GP practice, not an emergency department, and there are problems we will send you straight on for.
